Samsung started its stride into the year 2012 by introducing the Galaxy Ace Plus, the enhanced version of its predecessor Galaxy Ace. This entry-level smartphone will fit perfectly for those who do not fancy to spend too much of their money on today's essential communication device. The addition of Galaxy Ace Plus that has resemblance to the the first generation Apple's iPhone may add fuel to the ongoing legal battles and patent disputes between Apple and Samsung.

Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus Smartphone (front and back view)

How Galaxy Ace Plus differs from its predecessor?

Galaxy Ace Plus is a step-up of its predecessor but with most major features are almost the same to the Galaxy Ace. With hardly significant improvement being incorporated into Galaxy Ace Plus it is still considered as entry-level smartphone category.

Faster processor (800MHz upgraded 1 GHz)

Slightly larger screen (3.5-inch to 3.65-inch HVGA display)

Resolution remains at 320×480

RAM almost doubled from 278MB to 512MB

Internal memory boosted up 3GB from 158 MB

1 300 mAh battery

HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connectivity

5 MP rear camera with auto-focus along with LED flash

As far as the smartphone software is concerned, Galaxy Ace Plus runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS and is equipped with the TouchWiz UI overlay to allow better and efficient handling of the mobile. Looking at the music feature, you are able to view your songs in folders. Galaxy Ace Plus also allows your to add unwanted callers to the blacklist log and rejects call when you are texting.

With Galaxy Ace Plus you can view and edit your Office documents while on the move. This is definitely a handy feature to those who need prompt access to their business or work documents while they are away from the workplace. This handy feature, ThinkFree allows you open and edit document such as Excel, Word, PDF, PowerPoint and many more.

Design wise, the handset is much more rounded as compared to the original one. Even though it's slightly thinner to Galaxy Ace at 11.2mm, it weighs slightly heavier at 115 g.

How much it is priced?

The Galaxy Ace Plus will start hit the Russian market as early as January 2012 and will be gradually rolled out to other regions such Asia, Middle East, Africa, China, Europe, and Latin America. Even though the price is not yet to be revealed, we can safely assume that price will not differ much from the Galaxy Ace.

What to consider before buying?

The Galaxy Ace Plus is not a major upgrade to Galaxy Ace but still it's a decent upgrade. The downsides of this new smartphone are the lack of ICS and its low resolution. Giving the fact that price will relatively low as compared to other high end smartphones, this probably is the best trade-off you could take up.

Samsung’s Galaxy Ace is a formidable Android 2.2 enabled device with classy looks and is sleek too. The phone resembles iPhone 4 in its overall design and in fact beats it in some of the key features too. The phone can be availed at competitive rate of $400. The smart phone from Samsung has 5 MP camera and iPhone like resolution too.

The crisp quality 3.5 inch screen is the highlight of the phone. It can provide battery support of up to 10 to 18 hours if used with optimal usage. One can leverage from the robust apps of Android market while trying to download them on the device.

The smart phone has 3.5G enablement and accessing Internet on this device is sheer fun and excitement. The service provider has packaged lush tan colored leather pouch to safeguard the phone from free fall or external physical shocks. One can also change the back cover from black to white if desired.

It is also provided on the box as an inclusion. The other inclusions include 2 GB microSD memory card and earphones. The memory can be extended up to 32 GB through microSD card.

The best breed Android phones are hitting the international markets almost every week. Android apps are expected to outnumber the ones on the App store in the near term. Samsung Galaxy Ace should be the ideal choice of the value centric customers across the globe who finds Samsung Galaxy II an expensive bet and other lower models too cheap.

The device can be upgraded to Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 with utter ease too. One should leverage from Samsung’s Kies software and upgrade the OS from 2.2 to 2.3. The update is currently available in UK and Nordic regions and it is anticipated to hit to the international markets on the move.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia arc comes as one of the latest additions to an increasingly crowded Android space, but with a fairly unique preposition: A huge 4.2-inch Reality Display touchscreen with Sony's Mobile BRAVIA Engine technology. Is the arc as good as it promises to be?

The first thing that strikes you about Sony Ericsson Xperia arc is how thin it is, at just 8.7 mm thick it is almost half the thickness of most phones available today. If you look carefully at the back of the phone, you will also notice that the arc stands out from the others because of its curved profile.

While we were fans of the simple and clean design, we felt that more work could have been done to improve the tiny power button, which took a bit of effort to press. On the other hand, the camera shutter button was a welcome addition in an age where most smartphone makers somehow decided to stop including dedicated camera buttons on their devices. This at least makes snapping pictures so much easier than having to tap on the screen.
Overall, the handling experience was positive, as the arc balances beautifully in the hand. If anything, the arc feels a little too light, and depending on how you hold it, can feel flimsy and fragile.

At a Glance

Display: 4.2-inch TFT capacitive screen
Camera: 8.1 megapixels / LED flash / Autofocus
Battery: 1500mAh
Talk time: 6 hours 55 min (GSM) / 7 hours (HSDPA)

The arc comes powered by Android, specifically version 2.3 (a.k.a. Gingerbread). Timescape reappears on the arc and can be easily added on the home screen as a widget. Combine Timescape together with a photo/video widget, and you get easy access to social networking updates and multimedia files.

The main draw of Sony Ericsson Xperia arc is its 4.2-inch TFT-LCD screen with Sony's Mobile BRAVIA Engine image processing technology, which aims to enhance video playback. The result is beautiful visuals when playing videos and games on the device as well as while navigating through the smartphone's stylish interface. The multimedia showmanship doesn't stop there as its snappy 8.1- megapixel camera produces clear and sharp photos with accurate blacks and colors. Because of its f/2.4 lens, visible details in night shots are also easier to capture without having to flush them out with the available LED flash.

Sony Ericsson's arc is good-looking, functional and primed for success. If the 4.2- inch awesome display doesn't bowl you over for some reason, its impossibly slim build will. Of course, this smartphone isn't perfect - minor flaws like impractical buttons and average battery performance take the overall score down a few notches, but the gorgeous widescreen display and capable camera are two of its biggest advantages. While it comes with a relatively standard 1GHz processor, you do get an extremely responsive device with more than enough horsepower for fluid multi¬tasking. All in all, the Sony Ericsson Xperia arc is a highly functional phone that balances both productivity and multimedia prowess.

The HTC Sensation marks HTC’s attempt to bring its flagship device to the level of excellence that Samsung has experienced in the past year. While HTC has been known to make some of the most desirable devices on the market …

The HTC Sensation marks HTC’s attempt to bring its flagship device to the level of excellence that Samsung has experienced in the past year. While HTC has been known to make some of the most desirable devices on the market and has a track record for quality products, in light of the Galaxy S and most recently the Galaxy S II, the company has fallen from the limelight thanks to the company’s South Korean rival.

The HTC Sensation is HTC’s attempt to not only challenge the idea of pixel dense screens, but dual-core processor phones as well. Does the phone deliver or does it fail? Read on to find out.

Hardware Design

Sensational is not the word that comes to mind when describing the overall design of the Sensation. Don’t get us wrong, this is a solid phone, but the design does not stray far from HTC’s proven design esthetics. As stated before, HTC is noted for making solid hardware and seeing that so far it has been going well for the company, why should they mess with a good design?

That said, the first thing you will notice about the Sensation is the 4.3 inch screen that lines the face of the device. That screen is qHD and needless to say, it is aimed squarely at the Galaxy S, ATRIX and iPhone 4 devices. Does it deliver? We’ll cover more of that later.

Above the screen is your standard speaker as well as a front facing camera which is used for self-portraits and video conferencing. You also have your ambient and proximity sensors above the screen. Below the screen you will find your four touch sensitive Android buttons. From left to right they are Home, Menu, Back and Search. They do differ a bit from the layout of other Android phones such as the Galaxy S which begins with the Menu button and then follows with the Home button. Personally we didn’t have a problem with it.

On the rear of the device is an 8MP camera which also shoots 1080p content at 24fps. On the left side of the phone is the microUSB port as well as the volume rocker. On the top of the device is a power button to the right side and a 3.5mm audio jack to the left side.
Overall the device feels very sturdy and the build quality is on par with the top smartphones available today.

Specifications

Specifications for the Sensation do read sensational. At the core of the device is a dual-core Qualcomm 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor. There is 768MB of RAM as well as 4GB of Internal Storage. Unfortunately only 1GB is user accessible so you will need to use that microSD card for extra storage. Thankfully the phone supports cards up to 32GB.

There is a standard 1520mAh Li-Ion battery, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi 80.11b/g/n and GPS/AGPS to boot.
The phones dimensions are minimal as well. Just 5 inches in length, 2.6 inches in width and 0.44 inches in thickness. The overall package weighs just 5.2 ounces with the battery in.

HTC Sensation (video)

Screen

One of the most anticipated features of the Sensation is the qHD screen which HTC is planning to pit against that of Samsung’s Super AMOLED Plus screen. So what do we think of the screen? In one word it is an excellent display. If you were to compare this display to any other device, except the Galaxy S II, it would come out the winner. Not only are the viewing angles exceptional, but the 960 x 540 pixels which provide a 16:9 native screen ratio, perfect for movie viewing, is unbelievable.

However, this device is meant to compete with the Galaxy S II and it is only fair that we compare them both. While the Sensation beats the GSII in pixel count (Samsung’s latest baby boasts 800 x 480), it still does not destroy the Samsung GSII in vibrancy. Yes, 35% more pixels are a great deal but unfortunately it does not translate into better direct sunlight viewing or overall viewing angles.

Don’t get us wrong though, the Sensation has a marvelous screen and in our tests we didn’t notice that big a problem with it overall. But when it came time to compare it to the Galaxy S II, Samsung edged it out. At any rate, you will be hard pressed to find another phone that can trump this, other than the previously mentioned Samsung device.

Performance

Performance on the Sensation is stellar as well. Thanks to the phones dual-core 1.2GHz processor, we had no problem playing 1080p content on the phone, shooting HD video on the phones camera which we might add is one of the better cameras we have seen on an HTC device. The only time we noticed some lag was when the phone played 1080p Flash content. That said, you might want to keep it in the 720p range. But everything else is great and overall performance is among the best we have seen.

Battery life is great as well. With moderate usage one can get two days charge out of the Sensation. However, with heavy usage that will drop down to a day’s charge.

Call quality is great as well. We won’t go on a limb and say it was the best we ever had, but it does provide solid quality and those using this phone should not notice any degradation in quality even when on speakerphone.

Software

The Sensation runs Android Gingerbread that is atop HTC’s Sense UI which is in version 3.0. We won’t delve much into Android 3.0 but we will say that the improvements to Sense UI are great. HTC has been known to have one of the best Android skins and with version 3.0 they have solidified the fact that a customized Android experience can add to the overall Android experience.

Conclusion

Would we recommend the Sensation? In one word yes! In two words, consider Samsung. Again we will say that the Sensation is among the best smartphones we have tested, however, in light of the Galaxy S II, we would give Samsung the edge. But in the end, if you would rather use Sense UI rather than TouchWiz, go with the Sensation.

If you are wondering why the Nokia E7 looks so familiar, you have the Nokia N8 to thank. Outwardly, the former is basically a larger version of the latter, but with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Similarly, the phone sports a somber and minimalist design with well-defined curves and contours that will fit right in with the business-minded crowd. The E7 is remarkably slim considering that it comes with a full QWERTY keyboard, though feels distinctly heavier at 176g.

On the multimedia end of things, the Nokia E7 does pretty well, save for its disappointing 8-megapixel fixed-focus camera. Otherwise, we were generally impressed by its above average audio quality, as well as Nokia's inclusion of a HDMI port and especially by its bright and clear 4.0-inch AMOLED screen with ClearBack technology. The latter does very well with color reproduction boasting excellent readability under bright sunlight. On the downside, we expected a screen resolution of at least 480x800 pixels on a high-end phone like the E7, instead of its low 360x640 pixel resolution.

The physical keyboard for the Nokia E7 comprises of well-spaced but compact keys that have good tactile feedback. However, we felt that the keys might be a little too flush into the chassis for comfortable typing. Those with smaller hands might find it hard to reach the middle portion of the keyboard given the width of the phone; this includes the spacebar too.

In accordance with its business-centric positioning, USB drives or memory sticks can be accessed on the E7 with an included Micro USB to USB (On-the-Go) OTG adapter. This useful feature allows users to easily transfer data when on the move.

The Nokia E7 comes with plenty to like, as well as a few quirks. For starters, we were impressed with its sturdy and eye-pleasing design. However, we felt that its ports and controls could have been better positioned, given that the power button and volume/zoom slider placement wasn't ideal. On the other hand, our experience with the physical QWERTY keyboard has been generally positive, though only when you get used to the key placement and keyboard design. More importantly, the E7 comes packed with a couple of nifty additions for the business-centric user for both software (support for corporate email; remote wipe facility) and hardware {HDMI port and USB OTG capabilities). Battery life is average for a smartphone of its caliber, requiring at least one full charge everyday.

Despite a high price tag of $650+, the Nokia E7 is a reasonable purchase for those who are looking for a business-centric phone that strikes a good balance between productivity and lifestyle - if you don't mind the dated Symbian OS. The E7 would have been a stunner if it came a year earlier, but at this juncture, the software platform featured on the E7 raises a lot of questions with regards to its longevity.

At A Glance

Battery: 1200 mAh

Though many outstanding Android devices have been launched recently, the Samsung Nexus S is still a different phone altogether. It boasts of a 1Ghz processor, 512 MB RAM, 4-inch, 800x480 Super AMOLED screen, 16 GB storage, 5 megapixel rear camera apart from its communication capabilities. Another great features is that the Samsung Nexus S has the latest version of the Android operating system, Gingerbread. Along with some improvements to the user interface, the Samsung Nexus S has really tried to stand out among similar smart phones.

The screen and the front glass of the Samsung Nexus S are slightly curved which makes it sit nicely against your face when talking. Though its not a major difference in design, it does give the phone a unique appearance. Alongside the left you have the volume rocker and the power on/off switch is on the right. The bottom houses the micro USB and the headphone jack. The overall dimensions of the phone are 2.48 x 4.87 x 0.42 inches. The performance speed is truly awesome and though there is 16 GB on-board storage, an addition of a microSD card would have been welcome. The Super AMOLED display screen looks beautiful.

The audio quality on the Samsung Nexus S is great with both the earpiece and the speakers both sounding loud and clear. Though the camera performs decently, capturing video is not really all that pleasant. There is no HD option and you can record only 720 x 480 pixels. The battery performed impressively lasting more than 20 hours on a single charge inspite of heavy use. However if you are prone to making lot of calls or a gaming addict you might need a second battery.

Other tiny improvements included the updated user interface with the icons being refreshed. However the biggest improvement in the interface is the on-screen keyboard. They have included word suggestions, copy and paste and selection functions. There are still some problems though. One of them being no consistent method of selection with different methods applying for the browser, text editor and the message app. Google seems to be making efforts to make Android a formidable gaming platform. They have included new APIs and tools for improving code support and help develop faster and graphically better games.

Overall, even though there are some tiny issues with the phone, the Samsung Nexus S is certainly the best Android based device available in the market today.

The Motorola Atrix 4G running on a 1 Ghz dual core Tegra 2 processor, and with a 4-inch 960x540 pixel screen is a laptop, set top box, desktop computer and smartphone all rolled into one. The dimensions of the handset are 4.63 x 2.5 x 0.43 inches and it weighs about 4.8 ounces, which makes it as thin as the iPhone, though not so light weight but its an incredibly power-packed device.

The front of the phone has the usual Android buttons at the bottom, camera and earpiece at the top and the rear of the phone has the power on/off button which doubles up as a fingerprint scanner. Though it is truly exciting to unlock a phone using the fingerprint scanner, being told to do it repeatedly if you want to unlock the phone fast is a pain. On the rear is also the 3.5mm headphone jack and the volume rocker is placed along the right side.

Alongside the left are the micro USB and HDMI ports with the 5 megapixel camera, LED flash and speaker making up the back side of the Motorola Atrix 4G. Its one of the best looking phones available in the market today. Apart from looks, it is also one of the fastest Android based phones in terms of performance speed.

The screen display is now of a higher resolution and the touch response is also great. However, it is difficult to see the screen in bright sunlight and the automatic brightness adjustment didn't seem to work all that well. The battery is fairly impressive with it lasting more than 24 hours on a single charge even after heavy use. The 5 megapixel camera which also works as a 720p video camera does a stunning job capturing HD content.

The greatest excitement about the Motorola Atrix 4G has been that the phone almost turns into a complete PC with the addition of the laptop dock. Using a software called Webtop, which is just the Firefox browser with some settings done to integrate with the phone, you can use your phone in a window. However the browsing experience using this unusual combination is far from pleasant.

It is slow and sloppy but the thought behind this technology is exciting. The phone is priced at $199.99 with a 2 year contract and the laptop dock costs $299.99 apart from the desktop dock and the keyboard and mouse. It really does not offer great value with this pricing.

Apart from the pricing and the accessories, the Motorola Atrix 4G is really an awesome device. The performance standards and the Android based system really help it to be a power house packed in a sleek device.

The HTC Desire HD continues the HTC tradition of big 4.3-inch screens and in addition has got the Sense user interface upgraded with a plethora of features. Though it has a big screen, it is really a slim phone with the dimensions being 68mm x 123mm x 11.8mm. The four backlit, touch sensitive buttons at the bottom are great but if they had been physical keys, they would be much more easier to use.

The battery cover is below the volume switch and as you remove the cover the battery falls off. There is nothing else holding it. The microSD card and the SIM slots are at the bottom of the phone for which you have to remove another cover.

The upgraded Sense user interface is phenomenal in its performance running on Android 2.2 operating system. It offers a number of new widgets and a wide variety of home screens to choose from. The responsiveness of the screen is awesome and it does not seem to slow down even with multiple tasks running simultaneously.

You can open the notifications bar by running your finger down the screen. The super feature here is that it shows your recently accessed icons allowing you immediate repeat access. Even when you are synchronizing multiple accounts and with a few background tasks running, the performance does not slow down and that is why this interface is truly phenomenal.

The Internet browsing experience on the HTC Desire HD is also great with the Android operating system and the big screen. It supports Flash so video content can also be viewed. However, the video player left a lot to be desired. While using Youtube the audio synchronization is poor and the overall experience is not good. You can open multiple web pages and it is easy to share a page with your friend using Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, SMS or Bluetooth.

HTCSense.com is their portal that facilitates remote control of your phone. At the first instance, it might seem that these are measures to be taken if your phone is stolen. You can forward your calls and messages to another number, you can override the vibration setting and make the phone ring out loud, send a message to your phone or lock it, erase all data, and such other things. However it was difficult to connect to the problem due to various connectivity issues.

Overall, the HTC Desire HD offers a phenomenal interface and a great internet browsing experience. However the battery life is poor, the video player needs some tinkering and they also need to sort out the connectivity issues with their HTCSense.com portal.

The handset which sports a 2.2 inches QVGA display along with HSDPA, 3G and HSUPAis getting firmware update version 61.004. This update brings performance improvements and better stability.

Apart from performance improvements, the firmware also comes along with the latest version of Ovi Store, updated music player as well as updated smileys. The update of Nokia 6700 can be done either by using Nokia Software Updater (NSU) or via OTA. This device features UDP so you don’t have to be worried about making a backup of the data before initiating the firmware update.

Just to be on the safe side, it's highly recommended to make a backup on your own, nobody knows what may go wrong.

The battle to break iPhone domination of touchscreen smart phone market continues with the promising look of the next generation of HTC Google Android, the G2. Gizmodo recently <strike>unveiled</strike> (link expired) the leaked photos of the Google G1 successor that is rumored to hit the market by the end of first half 2009. There are several changes and improvements made on the upcoming Google Android G2 with the hope to ignite enough spark of interest amongst the smart phone enthusiasts.

One of the obvious changes is the absence of physical QWERTY keyboard. Some people may be a bit disappointed with this change but as an iPhone user, I prefer G2 with no physical keyboard. Design wise, G2 has now the right vibrant color scheme for its body; white instead of the boring pale gray color on its predecessor and the shiny curvy backside of G2 adds the appeal to G2.

Among other feature that will be implemented on HTC Google Android G2 is the 3.2 MP camera, mounted on the back of the smart phone. Looking forward for the official announcement!

Now it's Nokia's turn to unveil its long-awaited touchscreen mobile phone, Nokia 5800 or also known as "The Tube" after T-Mobile's Google-powered G1 was officially launched recently. With Nokia 5800 has already set foot in the touchscreen realm, the only question that boggles users is whether the dubbed iPhone killer can really live to the expectation and steal some of Apple’s market share?

First, let's take a look at the specifications. The Nokia XpressMusic 5800 Tube sports all the top notch features that we expect from Nokia.

The Nokia Xpress Music 5800 features 3.2" high resolution display (640 x 360 pixels) packs in a pressure based touch screen. A 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera with Car Zeiss lens which adorns the backside of "the Tube" will definitely entertain users who seek quality pictures. Nokia Tube comes with the complete package of the GPS receiver, WiFi radio, quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio which include North American 3G support and European 3G support.

Features:

Dimension: 111 mm x 51.7 mm x 15.5 mm

Weight: 109 g

3.2" screen with 16:9 aspect ratio

3.2 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics

Virtual QWERTY keyboard & a pen stylus

Bluetooth, GPS, 3G, and Wi-Fi

8GB memory

FM radio

Support for all main digital music formats

Built-in surround sound stereo speakers

Graphic equalizer

Available in red, black and blue

The Nokia Tube’s price-point is one of the interesting aspects because it will be available for just €279 (about $392) in unlocked form.

How does the 5800 XpressMusic stack up with the iPhone and the G1? Judging from the pictures and features, it looks promising. The final verdict may only be decided after seeing it in action.
